The stores had been equipped with inefficient T-12 fluorescent lighting with magnetic ballasts.Both the lamps and the ballasts were not only poor quality, but were costly as well, in terms of energy use. According to Scott Elison, Project Manager, “The biggest problem they had was the color of the lamps. Boyer’s Food Markets

Most of the Boyer’s Markets still retained their original T-12 fluorescent lighting. A few of the stores had fixtures installed running across the aisles which caused light levels to fluctuate as the customer walked down the aisle. Other stores had fixtures which were not providing adequate light levels to showcase the products. Another area of concern created by their extended hours of operation was that the incandescent lamps used in spot lighting specials always needed to be replaced.
